Minors in the Proximity of NSFW Conversations
I was in a webfishing lobby today and most of us were talking about NSFW stuff when someone said they hoped there were no minors around. Everyone started agreeing about how bad it’d be and how there needs to be 18+ only lobbies. It’s a discussion I’ve seen similar of before and strikes me as bizarre. Just… who cares? Why is this something worth bothering to think about? Minors shouldn’t be shielded from something as simple and basic as people talking about sexuality. Running across some people discussing it in a game will not hurt any parties in any way. In the 13 y/o + category, most on the internet are already looking at porn or have generally seen things more intense than people talking about it. Below that category, they won’t even understand properly and their parents should be supervising their electronic usage. Why should the responsibility be on a bunch of random consenting adults and not the kids parents for something that doesn’t even matter? Why do minors even need to be shielded from a conversation? It’s feels like a traditional conservative family values thing but it’s coming from people on the left. On a personal level rather than thinking from the minor’s perspective, I don’t give a shit if a minor can see any NSFW text or whatever of mine wherever. It’s, again, on parents to supervise. Older minors can distance themselves from the content if they want, and if they wanna read it anyway, I still don’t care. As long as they aren’t trying to engage in a charged manner with me, it doesn’t matter. If they are, then fucking obviously that’s gross and shit needs to be dealt with. That’s not really the scenario I’m talking about but I felt like it needed to be said still. Continuing, it’s not my responsibility to police every possibility of someone who “shouldn’t” be seeing stuff to see it. I’m not going to sanitize myself and walk on eggshells in relation to sexuality expression or anything else because minors exist on the internet. Fuck that.
